TEAMSTERS HAPPENING JULY 2018
Aug 06, 2018
TEAMSTER’S HAPPENING            (July 2018)

Freight topics

  • YRC- Road and City grievance settlements more than $7600.00 since January 2018.
  • USF Holland grievance settlements more than $11,500.00 since January 2018
  • UPS Freight grievance settlements more than $530.00 since January 2018
  • Have resolved more than 162 discharges and suspensions.
  • Business Agent Steve Bishop was appointed to the ABF National Negotiating Committee which were finalized July 1, 2018. He was also the Union Co-chair of the ABF Carolina’s Supplemental agreement where he did an outstanding job in not only negotiating a beneficial contract for our members but played a crucial part in resolving issues for the ABF Road drivers in Local 391 as well.

UPS

  • The IBT and UPS have reached tentative agreements on the UPS Package, UPS Freight and CSI contracts.  A two-man meeting will be held in Chicago, IL on August 9th for approval by all local Unions prior to being sent to the general membership for a final VOTE. Hopefully this can be completed by the end of August, 2018. Any retro pay or benefits will be adjusted back to August 1st.
  • A contract review, along with questions and answers will be held on August 11th @ 9:00 at the Union Hall. A subsequent meeting will be held in Florence on August 15th
  • The implementation of Saturday ground delivery operation continues to be a huge staffing challenge for the Charlotte Hub with both part-time and full-time needs. At the current time there are still over 18 Full-time Package Car drivers positions to be filled in the Charlotte Hub alone.
  • At the time of this writing there are still over 15 Full-time Feeder driver positions open in the Charlotte hub and surrounding area. The company has even gone to outside hires in hopes of filling these positions prior to Peak Season. This is after posting the bid for these positions at least 4 separate times since January for all current part-time and full-time employees.
  • We have been able to resolve over 41 off the job discharges and suspensions and returned the individuals to work.
  •  We have won over $41,000 in grievance settlement since January 2018.

White Paper Contract

  • We successfully completed negotiations with Northern Tool & Equipment on a new three-year contract. The contract included improved benefits (expanded Funeral Leave and 6 weeks paid leave for birth of a child for the mother or father), plus average 3% increase per year.
  • We have completed the Master contract for ALSCO which covers the southeastern U.S. We were able to negotiate substantial increases in the commission rates for these drivers, as well as increase in the Pension contributions.
  • We are currently in negotiations with the Red Cross. We are teaming up with Local 391 and will be negotiating a Carolinas Regional Contract to cover all Red Cross facilities in the Carolinas.
  • We are continuing negotiations with ARAMARK Uniforms. We had reached a tentative agreement, but it was rejected by the membership after interference by local management. We will return to the table in early August.
  • We have completed the three arbitrations for off the job discharges. Unfortunately, we were not successful in two workplace violence cases. However, we were successful in the progressive discipline discharge at the Red Cross. The employee was returned to work with 11 months backpay and benefits.

Organizing Front

We continue to get calls for those interested in becoming a Teamster. Unfortunately, many of them only use the threat of organizing as a ploy to get their employers to step up their game. We will however continue to pursue any and all leads that come our way in hopes of growing this great Union.

AlscoFreight Topics

  • YRC - grievance settlements more than $3900.00 since January 2017.
  • USF Holland - Grievance settlements more than $3000.00 since September 2016.
  • UPS Freight grievances settlements more that $1500.00 since January 2017
  • Have resolved more that 76 discharges and suspensions.

UPS

  • Lake Norman Village (@UPS Freight terminal) is NOW a permanent NEW package center for UPS that includes 25 package car routes from the Derita and Gastonia Centers. They have recently announced they will be adding another 12 package car routes from the Derita center by early June 2017.  This has created several great opportunities for the junior package car drivers to get some very good bid routes.
  • The implementation of Saturday ground delivery operation started in Rock Hill, SC Center on 4/22/17.  This will initially affect 11 drivers.  We were able to negotiate an agreement to fully recognize seniority within the workgroup concerning bid routes and workweek.  This also added over 5 new FT drivers and 13 new PT employees so far.  Local #71 is the first in the Carolinas and under the Atlantic Area Supplement to have this service implemented.
  • The IBT has developed a new Facebook page for upcoming negotiations called "UPS Rising" for updates, info, calendar etc. They are in the process of adding a new Smartphone App, website and Twitter page as well.
  • We have resolved and protested over 89 discharges and suspensions and successfully won two discharge cases at the UPS Panel, returning those individuals to work.

White Paper Contract

  • Won a $70,000+ back pay and benefits decision for an Aramark employee from the Piedmont Grievance Committee.  The company is SO dissatisfied with the decision we are forced to file a suit in Federal Court to enforce the resolution.
  • Won a $5100.00+ back pay claim from Northern Tool for an improper discharge.
  • Kelloggs continues the process closing all the distribution centers down nationwide. Our local members received one of the best severance packages in the nation.
  • Alsco national negotiations will start this coming fall.

Organizing Front

  • We are continuing our monthly negotiations with FedEx Freight.  We have reached several "tentative agreements" on a number of items so far.  We have presented the company and mailed to the drivers a superior health and welfare plan that's less expensive, along with comprehensive pension plan, something they basically don't currently have.  We also learned at the Unity Conference the IBT has agreed to reimburse the Local Union up to 50% of our legal fees for this campaign.
  • We've had several calls and one meeting with other potential companies as we continue to move forward in our efforts to grow our Local Union.

  • YRC - grievance settlements more than $1600.00 since September 2016.

  • Has won 2 major discharge arbitrations this year with American Red Cross, with back pay benefits in excess of $100,000.
  • Settled numerous grievances with the American Red Cross resulting in MAJOR wage increases for ALL employees.
  • Won a precedent-setting arbitration case with Kellogg on the DriveCam.  The ONLY Union with contractual language "requiring" negotiations "PRIOR" to implementation.

Organizing Front

  • We are continuing our monthly negotiations with FedEx Freight, one of the most "anti-union" companies in the world.  It's been a slow process but they're at the negotiating table; something Fred Smith (CEO) said they'd NEVER do!!! Our Negotiating Committee has remained as we continue to move forward in this precedent-setting endeavor.
